NITA Introduction to Simultaneous Interpreting Workshop 1 by Katharine Allen (Reno)

Simultaneous interpreting is one of the three modes of interpretation and is, perhaps, the most challenging one to learn and master. For the first time, NITA will offer an intensive four-hour workshop to give attendees insight into this challenging and rewarding mode of interpreting. A recent study shows that simultaneous is the most frequently used mode of interpreting across all sectors. This half-day workshop, held in September in Reno, will provide beginning and practicing interpreters a clear road map to developing solid simultaneous interpreting skills. Participants will be introduced to the correct sequence for learning simultaneous through hands-on exercises and practice. They will also be given an overview of proper protocols to follow when using simultaneous in different settings, particularly court, medical and other community settings. Finally, tips for interpreting simultaneously in “whisper” mode and using portable equipment will be provided.

Speaker Bio:

Katharine Allen is Co-President of InterpretAmerica and owner of Sierra Sky Interpreting & Translation. Through InterpretAmerica, she co-organizes the annual North American Summit on Interpreting. A former California Healthcare Interpreting Association President, she works as an interpreter, translator, trainer, curriculum reviewer and language access consultant. Katharine has an MA in Translation and Interpretation from the Monterey Institute of International Studies, as well as numerous other training and educational certificates. She is co-author of the CHIA Hospital Organizational Assessment Tool and regularly works with hospitals around language access issues. She has published articles in professional publications and is a frequent speaker and trainer at conferences.
