NITA Presents: Two Days of Professional Development and Workshops

A NITA Continuing Education Event
We are holding a combination of events on September 10-11, 2010 in Las Vegas. This includes our free quarterly professional development event, an ATA certification exam sitting, networking meals, a board meeting, and a paid professional development workshop.
Venue: Latin Chamber of Commerce, Conference Room, 300 North 13th Street, Las Vegas, NV 89101
Day 1: Friday September 10 – 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.
ATA certification exam sitting
Although ATA certification is not required to practice as a translator in the US, it is a well-respected qualification that generally improves prospects for translation work. NITA is proud to be holding its first ATA certification exam sitting.
Registration: at least three weeks in advance at the ATA website. All arrangements, including eligibility, are made with ATA. You must be an ATA member to take the certification exam. NITA facilitates the event by arranging it and proctoring the exam, but does not register candidates.
Day 2: Saturday September – 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Morning Session, 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.

- 10:30 a.m. Andrea Krlickova, Administrative Office of the Court: THE COURT INTERPRETER CERTIFICATION PROCESS IN NEVADA
- 11:15 a.m. Alvaro Vergara-Mery, National Director of the National Board of Certification for Medical Interpreters: MOVING TOWARDS NATIONAL HEALTH CARE INTERPRETATION CERTIFICATION
Members should feel free to bring a friend or colleague.
12 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. Lunch on your own, list of local eateries will be provided.
Afternoon Session, 1:45 p.m. to 5 p.m.
COST: $100 for non-members of NITA, $65 for members of NITA
1:45 p.m. to 3: 45 p.m. Ines Swaney: Improvisation Techniques for Interpreters
By means of a series of exercises borrowed from the field of Improvisational Acting, this workshop engages attendees in linguistic problem-solving capabilities. This session was so well-received in Reno we are bringing Ines back to do it for us in Las Vegas.
4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Karen Tkaczyk: Becoming a Successful Freelance Translator
This presentation will give you practical information about preparing for and launching a successful career in translation. A variety of useful themes of interest to beginners will be covered: concrete tips and resources on marketing services to agencies and direct clients; office equipment and organization; meeting and exceeding client’s expectations; professional ethics; rates and compensation; computers and CAT programs; certification; regulations and requirements for independent contractors; continuing-education opportunities.
This afternoon session has been submitted to the Administrative Office of the Courts for continuing education credit and AOC approval is pending.
About the Speakers:
Ines Swaney is a federal and California certified Spanish court interpreter and ATA certified English-Spanish translator and voiceover talent with more than 20 years of experience.
Karen M. Tkaczyk, PhD, CT is an ATA certified freelance technical translator who from works her home office in Gardnerville, in the Carson Valley.
Alvaro Vergara-Mery is a medical interpreter and trainer at University Medical Center of Southern Nevada in Las Vegas. He is also a National Director of the National Board for Certification of Medical Interpreters and Chair of its Fundraising Committee. Dr. Vergara-Mery is the Nevada State Representative for the International Medical Interpreters Association. Dr. Vergara-Mery has presented workshops in the U.S. and abroad and is very involved in advancing the interpreting and translation fields.

Remember: your registration won’t be complete until both your registration information and payment have been received.

Here you can complete payment for your participation in the NITA Las Vegas September 2010 Conference for which you registered in the previous tab. Please note that your registration will not be final until both your registration information (via the form in the previous tab) and your payment have been received! Although payment is handled preferably through the PayPal payment processing service, you do not have to have a PayPal account (although your payment will be processed immediately if you have a verified PayPal account) as you can also use your credit card to pay through PayPal.
