Open Invitation to the NITA Spring 2010 Quarterly Symposium: Tools For Translators
by NITA Administrator ~ May 27, 2010

A NITA Continuing Education Event
We are pleased to announce the NITA Spring 2010 Quarterly Symposium, free and open to all NITA members and the general public interested in getting to know more about specific software technology and tools used for translation work. Hence its title:
Tools for Translators
NITA member are encouraged to bring a friend or colleague along!
The rather diversified and large area of computer assisted translation (CAT) technology will be broached at the Spring 2010 Symposium via two differentiated presentations. The first presentation will focus more on theory and offer a contextual, more abstract overview of when, and moreover: why the various available tools are used. The second presentation will dive into the practice, with real and hands-on illustrations of the most commonly used CAT tools, including basic components such as voice recognition software, scanning, and optical character recognition, as well as the current market-leading CAT tools proper, so as to see it all at work.
If you’re in the translation business, or generally would like to learn more about the more specialized areas where CAT tools are part of the indispensable working outfit, this is an excellent opportunity to come in and ask your questions, as there will be ample opportunity for practical questions on the tools that you might consider using. Below more details about this Spring 2010 Quarterly Symposium:
Speakers:
- Theory: Ãlvaro Degives-Más, Nevada state certified court interpreter and freelance translator.
- Practice: Karen M. Tkaczyk, Ph.D., ATA certified freelance technical translator working daily with a number of electronic tools from her home office in Gardnerville.
When:
Saturday June 12, 2010 – from 2pm until 4:30 pm
Where:
University of Nevada, Reno (UNR)
Matthewson IGT Knowledge Center, Auditorium 124
1664 N. Virginia St, Reno
Directions and map at www.knowledgecenter.unr.edu/locationsmap.html

If you like, you can download and print our event flyer (PDF, 52KB) to help spread the word and contribute to making it a successful event. (Of course, you can also help spread the love for language via your social networks, by using the special tools shown below on this page.)
Attention Nevada Court Interpreters:
NITA has obtained Continuing Education Credit approval for this event from the Court Interpreter Program, AOC, Nevada Supreme Court! Even when translation is not an activity you regularly engage in, the presentations at this Quarterly Symposium aim to offer you more insight into a dynamically evolving specialization in the common professional language services field.
Possibility for Telepresence / Teleparticipation / Teleconference:
Since the very beginning, NITA has the peculiarly large demographic spread of the state of Nevada in mind, with a strong focus on extending its scope of activities to the entire state of Nevada; not ‘just’ the two metropolitan areas of Las Vegas and the Reno / Carson / Tahoe area. Therefor, NITA is working hard on securing and confirming means necessary for fellow linguists who are located outside the Reno / Carson area to ‘virtually’ attend this Quarterly Symposium, at a remote location. However, at the moment of posting of this announcement it is not yet clear whether certain key technological facilities will be in place, so it is as of yet uncertain whether the telepresence will be available via full-blown (two-way) teleconferencing at a specific location, i.e. in Las Vegas), or via a webcast – which would be broadcast from the venue at UNR – or with an altogether different method.
Therefor: stay tuned for updates added later to this announcement on how to join in and participate at the Quarterly Symposium!
Let us know what you think!
If some telepresence option were available, how would you prefer to follow the NITA Spring 2010 Quarterly Symposium in Reno, on Saturday June 12?
- Since I am unavailable that day, 'live' is not an option, but I would love to have a 'video replay' available! (50%, 2 Votes)
- I prefer to be present personally at the event itself, instead of attending remotely (25%, 1 Votes)
- I can't attend, but I'll be happy to read a text-based report published afterward on NITA Online! (With pictures if possible!) (25%, 1 Votes)
- From my computer, via a webcast - provided there is a live feedback / participation option available (e.g. via a live chat box) (0%, 0 Votes)
- From my computer, but I am more interested in following it than in participating (0%, 0 Votes)
- At a given, fixed location, with a videoconference type hook-up (so I won't have the hassle of equipment myself) (0%, 0 Votes)
Total Voters: 4
Note: this poll closes for voting on June 12, 2010, at noon (PDT) so at the Quarterly Symposium we can announce the final results of this informal poll!
Feel free to leave your comments, ideas, and suggestions below this announcement, via the brand-spankin’ new comment system on NITA Online!
