Course Description

The University of Texas at Brownsville and Texas Southmost College

The aim of this course is to provide intensive practical instruction in consecutive interpreting from English into Spanish and from Spanish into English, focusing on short (community) interpreting and long (conference) consecutive interpreting. The course will cover practical skills such as note-taking, glossary building, short-term memory strengthening exercises and split-attention techniques.

By using the latest educational technologies, including videoconferencing, audio and video recording, live streaming and interactive virtual classrooms, The University of Texas at Brownsville offers this ground-breaking course, the first in a series of offerings in Spanish Translation and Interpreting that will continue in the Fall, Spring and Summer semesters of the 2010-2011 academic year.

About the Instructor

José Dávila-Montes, PhD in Translation and Cross-cultural Studies

He has been teaching Translation, Interpreting, Spanish and Japanese Language since 1999 in universities across Europe and the U.S.: The University of Texas at Brownsville, Autonomous University of Barcelona (Spain), State University of New York at Binghamton (NY), Hunter College (NYC), Dublin City University (Ireland). Since 1993, he has worked as a professional interpreter and translator, editor of encyclopedias, reference works and multimedia products, working in English, Spanish, Japanese and Catalan.

He is the coordinator of the undergraduate and graduate Translation Programs at the University of Texas at Brownsville (UTB) within the Department of Modern Languages. He also coordinates a fully on-line European MA program in Audiovisual Translation by the Autonomous University of Barcelona, Spain (UAB).

About the Program

The Graduate Diploma in Translation Studies offers graduate students a flexible, yet cohesive, one-year program of study designed to develop practical and theoretical translation skills, cultural mediation competence and professional interpreting capabilities, all in high demand by our increasingly multi-cultural society.

With a choice of different courses and specialties, the program is completely on-line, and all of the 15 credits (5 courses) required for graduation can be taken virtually anywhere, as long as there is a computer with an Internet connection. The flexible biweekly modules can accommodate any personal schedule. Designed and taught by world-class academics and professionals from all over the Americas and Europe who teach in prestigious universities around the globe, this program brings extensive know-how to the on-line delivery of this discipline.

The program is ideal for graduates who want to pursue a career in the Translation/ Interpreting profession, or for practicing professionals who want to deepen their abilities and hone their skills in this area of specialization. All coursework taken within the program may be used towards a Masters degree at UTB.

Admission Procedure

Admission Requirements include evidence of academic achievement and potential for advanced study and research. Specific admission requirements are:

• Personal interview (online)
• Letter of recommendation from the student’s undergraduate faculty advisor
• Satisfactory performance on the Spanish essay.
• Satisfactory performance on the translation of a document from English to Spanish and from Spanish to English.
