NITA is delighted to offer an American Translators Association (ATA) Certification Exam sitting in Las Vegas, in September of 2010. Although certification by the ATA is not required to practice as a translator in the US, it is an internationally well-respected qualification marking a high standard of cross-language competency, which generally improves your prospects for translation work, and for your clients unequivocally establishes your aptitude as a professional translator in the specific language pair and direction for which you passed the exam.

Please note that all pertinent arrangements must be made directly by the candidate with ATA; NITA cannot register anyone for this exam. Also, you must be an ATA member for four weeks prior to the exam itself, and there are some additional eligibility requirements, as indicated below:

About ATA Certification

Please be advised that taking a practice test first is highly recommended! Not to discourage but merely to forewarn and give some fair advice: there is a reason that the passing rate on first attempt of the ATA Certification Exam is quite low… It is a very tough test. That is why it is a very good idea to first take the practice test. However: keep in mind that one has to have been a member for at least four weeks prior to taking a practice test (or taking the real exam) so plan well ahead and keep an eye on the exam date!

ATA Certification is awarded upon successfully completing an open-book exam, which is administered under tightly controlled conditions. Examination is only available to ATA members who have been a member for at least for weeks prior to the exam, and meet at least one of the following additional ATA Exam prerequisites:

  • Translators and interpreters who submit proof of current accreditation or certification by a member association of the FIT (International Federation of Translators);
  • Translators and interpreters who submit proof of possessing an advanced degree, or an ATA approved T&I degree/certificate;
  • Translators and interpreters in possession of a bachelor’s degree and at least two years’ work as a translator or interpreter;
  • Translators or interpreters who submit evidence of at least five years’ work as a translator or interpreter.

ATA reserves the right to verify submitted credentials (this is mainly why at least four weeks of current ATA membership is required, as stated above.) Of course, all fees due (e.g. ATA membership, registration, the exam itself) must be paid as well.

Upon receiving notice of passing the exam, translators may refer to the ATA Certified Translator credential on their resumes, business stationery, cards, websites, and other related materials, provided they specify the language pairs(s) and direction(s), i.e. Spanish into English or Spanish > English. However: ATA certification status is valid only while membership of ATA is current and in good standing and continuing education requirements are met.
