Request for NITA Member Input – What Presentations / Workshops?

Request for Input from NITA Members
The NITA organization is a 100% volunteer-driven effort; we don’t have any paid or dedicated, full-time staff. But everyone involved in NITA, from its very beginning, is working toward a common goal, broadly defined as the need to advance and to elevate the quality and availability of language services in the State of Nevada.
That sounds perhaps a bit lofty but it is pursued really in a number of practical ways. For example, via regular presentations we organize for our valued members as well as the general public, in a range of subjects relevant to the working fields of translators and interpreters. We’ve offered presentations, full-blown trainings, as well as workshops on a wide range of topics:
- Improvisation Techniques for Interpreters;
- Health Insurance Options for Self-Employed Language Professionals;
- Free Software Applications for Translators;
- Getting Started in the Translation / Interpreting Business;
- Intercultural Communication;
- Lessons from Business School for Linguists;
- Notions on Literary Translations;
- Entrepreneurial Linguist Workshop;
- Tips & Tricks for MS Word;
- English-Language Accent Reduction;
- Better Written English;
- And, of course: our successful, 40-hour intensive Connecting Worlds / Health Care Interpreting Training.
We have several more lined up for this year, and plans for some exciting, additional courses and workshops in the making. However, as said at the beginning: NITA is a member-driven organization of and for language professionals.
That is why we are eager to hear from our members: what type of workshops and presentations would you like to see, what topics for language professionals would you like to see covered in the foreseeable future?
Karen Tkaczyk, our President, has invited all our members to offer suggestions and ideas for professional development that could be accommodated from the second half of this year onward. So, please log in via the form shown to the left of this page and hop right in here to offer your valued ideas!
We look forward to reading your input!

Hello!
I look forward to coming down to LV for some of your workshops some time. I would like to attend a workshop about project management and organization and/or accounting for translators.
Great job!

Hi Gloria, in the short term, there are two alternatives offered by the Wordfast team: one is to look into their available e-learning options, which are grouped per product (Classic, Professional…) and the other is to contact one of their trainers in the USA, some of which are relatively nearby (e.g. NW Pacific, SoCal) and may help you e.g. by indicating when their next session will be.
Hi Tess, sorry for the belated reply – please keep an eye on our Calendar of Events as well as announcements (see the “Latest News Articles” to the left of this page, or the more expanded Latest News page). I am fairly certain that later this year we’ll try and have a workshop in Vegas precisely on the “running a translation business” issue. Stay tuned!
And Alvaro, we’ve already organized several intensive workshops on precisely health care interpreting, albeit in the Northwestern Nevada region. We hope to also have one in fall / winter in Las Vegas, too – and we have already met a very enthusiastic reception of that initiative (it’s more than just an idea, it’s very, very likely going to happen) from several aspiring and active interpreters in the Vegas metro area, so please stay tuned on that also!
