• When: Saturday, March 6, 2010, 2 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., followed by a no- host informal networking happy hour at Chocolate Bar (475 S Arlington Ave # 1)

• Why: Meet fellow NITA members, network, attend two free presentations

“English-Language Accent Reduction” by Peter Sexton

Attendees will learn techniques to reduce their accents, and also learn to incorporate the American English intonation pattern into their speech. This seminar will be especially valuable for interpreters who find they are sometimes misunderstood by native speakers.

Peter Sexton is an assistant professor at UNR, where he teaches in the Intensive English Program. A former Fulbright Lektor, Peter has 20 years’ of language-teaching experience and holds an MA in Applied Linguistics and an MBA. He speaks Russian, Serbian, and Croatian.

“Better Written English” by Karen M. Tkaczyk

NITA president Karen M. Tkaczyk, a native of Scotland, will present a collection of tips and tricks on how to improve your English-language writing skills. Karen holds a Ph.D. in organic chemistry from Oxford University and is a full-time French and Spanish to English freelance technical translator specialized in chemicals, pharmaceuticals and cosmetics.
