This workshop will give you practical information about preparing for and launching a successful career in translation and/or interpreting. A wide variety of useful themes of interest to beginners will be covered, including concrete tips and resources on topics such as marketing one’s services to agencies and direct clients; office equipment and organization; evaluating, meeting and exceeding client’s expectations; quality assurance; professional ethics; compensation; computers and CAT programs; reading for self-improvement; bookkeeping issues; certification exams; regulations and requirements for independent contractors; the negotiation and drafting of contracts; continuing-education opportunities; resources for information on agencies’ reputations and payment practices; and T&I associations and conferences.

- THE INTERPRETER: Tracy Young is a registered nurse, and a freelance medical interpreter as well as a Language Access Services Coordinator for Barton Health.
- THE TRANSLATOR: Karen M. Tkaczyk, Ph.D., is a freelance technical translator who works for a variety for language service providers and direct clients from her home office in Gardnerville.
