CHIA selects Tracy Young as State CHIA Trainer for hospital employees and interpreters

Posted by on May 16, 2009

CHIA, California Health Care Interpreting Association, has chosen NITA past-president Tracy Young to be a State CHIA trainer for hospital bilingual employees and interpreters, and for administration staff. California has adopted the CHIA standards for all HC interpreters so training from CHIA is being organized for this. Regarding the training of administrators, this is enabled because Senate Bill 853 in California passed:

Senate Bill 853 – California Language Assistance Program (CALAP) went into effect 1/1/09 to ensure compliance you must:

“This landmark language assistance law will end the unnecessary distress and confusion many health plan members with LEP have when attempting to access care.

“It will ensure that California health plan members receive their health care services in a language that they can speak and understand.”

Cindy Ehnes, Director, Department of Managed Health Care

CHIA trainers are going into hospitals and supporting them with creating a Language Access Services Department and providing necessary resources to complete this task.
Ms. Young will complete the training this month in Oakland, CA. There were only 20 trainers chosen for employees and only 5 chosen for administrators so this is a great honor for Ms. Young, who says “I feel honored to work so closely with CHIA. It will be a model process for us to implement here in Nevada.”
